| GLOSSARY |
| |
|
| |
Broadband In general, broadband refers
to data transmission in which a wide band of frequencies is available to
transmit information. |
| |
DCT (Digital Consumer Terminal) DCT is a
device that connects to the cable coming into your home. A DCT allows you to
view digital channels on your television. A DCT also features an interactive
program guide, parental controls and it allows you to order Pay-Per-View movies
and events right from the terminal. |
| |
Digital Cable A method of compressing and
transmitting data (television signals). Because digital data is smaller, more
information can be transmitted. The result is a better picture, better sound and
more channels. Customers require a DCT to receive digital channels in their
home. |
| |
Dolby Digital 5.1 Dolby Digital provides five
full-bandwidth channels, front left, front right, centre, surround left, and
surround right, for true surround sound quality. A low frequency effect (LFE)
channel is included that provides the sound needed for special effects and
action sequences in movies. The LFE channel is one-tenth of the bandwidth of the
other channels and is sometimes erroneously called the subwoofer channel. This
multichannel scheme is known as 5.1 channel. |
| |
DTV Television
signals that are recorded, broadcast, and processed digitally. Currently, 18
different DTV formats have been specified, including SD and HD formats. DTV
broadcasts are sharper than analog broadcasts and offer much better noise
immunity and resistance to degradation. |
| |
DVR A Digital
Video Recorder is a device that allows you to control what you watch and when
you watch it. It allows you to store and access TV programs – like a VCR but
with no videotape. With the DVR you can also pause live TV and choose the
programs you want to record through the interactive program guide across
multiple channels and time slots. |
| |
HDTV*
DTV signals
that feature greater vertical and horizontal resolution compared to standard
definition TV signals and are presented in a widescreen (16:9) format. HDTV
pictures have twice the color resolution and roughly six times the sharpness of
SD images. |
| |
PPV (Pay-Per-View) A premium service which you
can use to order movies and events. With Pay-Per-View, you select which movies
or events you wish to see. Therefore, you only pay for what you
order. |
| |
VOD (Video on Demand) Video on
demand is a service which allows you to rent movies from your DCT. Unlike PPV,
VOD allows you to begin watching the movie at anytime after you have rented it.
VOD also allows you to fast forward, rewind stop and resume viewing (just like a
VCR). |
