Q:
What is a Bit Cap and why should I be aware of it?

A: Bandwidth is the term used to describe the amount of data being transferred to or from a particular Web site, Web server, etc. It is typically measured in some multiple of bits or bytes over a specified period of time, such as a second or a month. Bandwidth is the capacity of data that can be transported by the network. All networks have a finite capacity and therefore a limited amount of bandwidth is available on the various parts of the Internet (which itself is a series of interconnected networks). For example, it takes a lot more bandwidth to transfer a picture in one second than it does to transfer a two-line e-mail message in the same amount of time.

COGECO actively monitors bandwidth usage by individuals to ensure our user community always enjoys a fast and reliable Internet connection. Excessive bandwidth usage can be caused by virus traffic or a PC being compromised by a hacker or excessive Peer-to-Peer traffic and can cause harm to the COGECO network as well as impact our customers' Internet experience. Current limits are available at http://www.COGECO.com/aup. Abusing these limits may result in COGECO contacting you to assist you in managing your bandwidth usage and ensure that your PC has not been compromised.

Q:
I received a warning from COGECO Network Security, what happens now?

A: COGECO Network Security uses automated tools and reports from users to identify and investigate possible security incidents. Based on our investigations you may receive a warning from COGECO Network Security which will include some basic details and further information on how you can investigate your bandwidth usage.

COGECO Network Security is aware that the majority of incidents we investigate are a result of compromised PCs. It is our intention to work with you in preventing your security from being compromised, which could result in identity theft or, in some cases, criminal activities being carried out using your PC and Internet connection. In these situations COGECO is obligated to work with law enforcement agencies as we wish to ensure that there are no security breaches on our network or yours.

If you have received a notification from COGECO Network Security, review the information carefully and if you need further assistance or information, simply reply to the e-mail without changing the subject line.

To contact COGECO Network Security to report an incident or to discuss network security, e-mail security@COGECO.net or via online form.
