CABLE INTERNET SECURITY

Q: Is cable less secure then DSL or Dial-Up?
Q: How does COGECO protect me from Internet threats?

Q:
Is cable less secure then DSL or Dial-Up?

A: Some advertising campaigns and media coverage that discuss various Internet connection technologies have unnecessarily raised concerns regarding the security of
cable-based High Speed Internet connections. They have questioned the security of cable technology, which provides a "shared" or "always on" High Speed Internet connection. This has led some people to worry that their cable modem and High Speed Internet connections are not as secure as DSL or Dial-Up Internet connections.

With today's technology and specifically the DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) modem standard, these concerns are not valid. High Speed Internet Cable Connections are just as secure as DSL and Dial-Up connections. COGECO, which currently uses a DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 network, has designed its network infrastructure to significantly reduce or eliminate any risk to your security or to its network. Through industry standards and COGECO-built custom filters (such as filters that disallow traffic to/from Microsoft File & Printer sharing ports over the COGECO network), COGECO strives to ensure your data remains private and confidential.

For more information on DOCSIS visit http://www.cablelabs.com.

Q:
How does COGECO protect me from Internet threats?

A: COGECO utilizes several network filters to deny traffic to/from the most frequently targeted ports such as NetBIOS ports. If you have a legitimate need for these services or ports, you should use a VPN which will cause all traffic to pass through the VPN tunnel unfiltered.
