REPORTING NETWORK SECURITY INCIDENTS

Q: How do I report illegal activity on the Internet?
Q: I think someone is trying to hack my computer, what do I do?
Q: What can I do about disruptive online behaviour?

Q:
How do I report illegal activity on the Internet?

A: If you come across, or are a victim of, illegal activities on the Internet, you should contact the appropriate network administrator and provide details so they can further investigate. Please note: if you feel that you or your family are in danger, call 9-1-1 and/or your local police department immediately.

For non-threatening incidents you can usually e-mail the appropriate network administrator. It is important to send complete details and any evidence regarding the incident. Details such as firewall logs, Spam message headers and timestamps with appropriate time zones are necessary for network administrators to investigate further and take action, if necessary.

Most company policies, including COGECO's, strictly forbid the transmission of subscriber information to third parties. Requests for subscriber information including name, address, etc. will be ignored.

Q:
I think someone is trying to hack my computer, what do I do?

A: Step 1 - Remain calm. Many people often mistake common applications or traffic for malicious attempts on their system.

Step 2 - Disconnect your system from the network by removing the Ethernet cable (looks like an oversized phone cable). If you have a wireless network, power down the wireless router.

Step 3 - Review the details, make notes if necessary and investigate further. Broadbandreports.com offers an excellent overview of the steps you should take if you believe you system has been compromised. Visit: http://www.broadbandreports.com

Q:
What can I do about disruptive online behaviour online?

A: With the freedom of the Internet comes the potential for offensive and/or disruptive behaviours online. Often people on the Internet will say things or act in ways they normally never would in real life. Most of these incidents involve minor arguments, but some incidents can escalate to dangerous situations.

While COGECO will always assist subscribers in every possible manner, it is our policy to let law enforcement agencies investigate any threats involving bodily harm or slander. In such cases, please contact your local police department and they can contact COGECO for further assistance with their investigation.
